I am working currently with a customer to improve their local ‘find-ability.” I reviewed their online listings and found that most of the places their business was listed was incorrect. Over a four to five year period they had changed addresses and contact information several times. In some cases the name of the organization was wrong. After searching through more than one hundred sites I am still finding wrong information.

Citations are an important element in getting your website found by your potential customers. As I have mentioned in previous articles, you can have the greatest looking website, but if it cannot be found by your customers, what’s the point?

Having consistent citations across the web builds confidence in the major search engine that are trying to understand who you are and how relevant you are to people searching. Many conflicting citations cause the search engines to ‘wonder’ who you really are. This results in a business having a lower ranking.

Citations are particularly important to local businesses. In a local niche, many businesses do not have websites. As a result, the search engines rely heavily on citations. Citations also validate the legitimacy of a business since membership in local organizations such as the chamber of commerce is hard to fabricate.

I would suggest that a business does a thorough search of the web for places where they may be listed and update those sites if they find incorrect information. If your business is not listed in many places I would encourage you to get yourself listed on as many directories as you can, starting with Google Places.

You will find that having consistent information about your business across the web will improve your ability to be found by the search engines, you will be ranked higher by the search engines and found more often by your potential customers.
